Epicycloidale Ornamente

2012

The program used to create the motifs of this series of postcards is an image generator for the production of ornaments. The basic elements are two formulas for curves that are mutually interconvertible by a control parameter. Further variations of the images can be achieved by modifying several other parameters using sliders and buttons. The program is based on the graphical user interface of the 'Wolfram Demonstrations Project'. In order to use this program, you only need to download the cost-free Wolfram CDF Player.

The Wolfram Demonstrations Project is a useful tool to generate, among other applications, kinetic as well as interactive works of art. Mathematica's programming capability enables the user to arrange structures based on rules aiming at aesthetic effects: e. g. symmetry, homothety (conformal transformations), and continuity. The ready-to-use 'Demonstrations' can themselves be considered as finished works of art, but they can also serve as raw material for further experimentation. They have proved to be useful in scientific investigations in the field of aesthetics as well as for mathematical visualizations and experiments. Thus, the images produced using digital technology are a significant contribution to currently popular attempts to intensify the connections between Science and Art.
